Causes of Hair Loss in WomenWhile hairloss is often viewed as a man's problem, as many as two thirds of women also experience thinning hair at some time during their lives. Sometimes this "thinning" is temporary; other times, it is permanent.Temporary Hairloss Certain factors may encourage hair follicles to enter the telogen, or resting, phase prematurely and may prevent new hairs from replacing those shed. Treatment to remove or alleviate the inciting stress factor will often encourage the regrowth of hair in a two to four months.
Causes of Temporary Hairloss
Permanent Pattern Baldness
In many women, hairloss may result from "female pattern baldness," which can be experienced by women as young as 30 years of age. Female pattern baldness typically presents itself as diffuse thinning that is often noticed first at the temples and on top of the head. This condition is usually progressive; however the rate of progression is slow.
Some women develop a form of "male pattern baldness" in which hairloss is experienced in the typical "U" shape pattern that is common among men. Women with this condition rarely see hairline recession; however, most experience gradual progressive thinning in the frontal and midline areas of the scalp. Generally, hair is maintained in the fringe area, which is the two to four inches of hair closest to the neck and above ears.
